THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA'S BEST IDEA | Americans own ...
May 12, 2012
www.pbs.org Over a montage of images of the country's most spectacular landscapes — from the Grand Canyon to Yosemite — writer Dayton Duncan talks about the notion that is at the heart of the park idea: namely that the people own the land. As discussed in Ken Burns's newest film, THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA'S BEST IDEA, premiering Sunday-Friday, September 27-October 2, 2009, at 8 pm ET/PT, the magnificent views of mountains, waterfalls and canyons belong not to an exclusive few, but to everyone and this is what makes it a truly democratic idea. Tanzania - Serengeti National Park
May 06, 2012
The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region located in north-western Tanzania and extends to south-western Kenya between latitudes 1 and 3 S and longitudes 34 and 36 E. It spans some 30000 km2. The Serengeti hosts the largest and longest overland migration in the world, a semi-annual occurrence. This migration is one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world. The region contains several national parks and game reserves. Serengeti is derived from the Maasai language, Maa; specifically, "Serengit" meaning "Endless Plains". Approximately 70 larger mammal and some 500 avifauna species are found there. This high diversity in terms of species is a function of diverse habitats ranging from riverine forests, swamps, kopjes, grasslands and woodlands. Blue Wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffalos are some of the commonly found large mammals in the region. Around October, nearly 2 million herbivores travel from the northern hills toward the southern plains, crossing the Mara River, in pursuit of the rains. In April, they then return to the north through the west, once again crossing the Mara River. This phenomenon is sometimes called the Circular Migration. Over 250000 wildebeest alone will die along the journey from Tanzania to Masai Mara Reserve in upper Kenya, a total of 500 miles. Death is often caused by injury, exhaustion, or predation. The migration is chronicled in the 1994 documentary film, Africa: The Serengeti. ( source Wikipedia )

Mesa Verde National Park
May 19, 2012
Visit the park on-line: www.nps.gov President Theodore Roosevelt on June 29, 1906, set aside Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado. This land, inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans for over 700 years, included the most complete and extensive concentration of prehistoric cliff dwellings in the United States. Today, the park protects over 4000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. In fact, these sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States. The Native Americans first settled on the Colorado Plateau and farmed the mesas. Life was hard in the arid climate, boasting warm summers, cold winters, and limited rainfall. They lived in various settlements above ground until AD 1100, when they started constructing the massive cliff dwellings. Many have thought that the Ancestral Puebloans retreated to the cliff dwellings to hide from aggressors, but archeological evidence does not support that theory. In fact, the entire region lived in harmony. The cliff dwellings do offer better protection from the elements than the mesa-top sites, which may be one reason we see so many similar dwellings across the southwest. Between AD 1200 and 1400, there was a mass exodus from the region. To this date, we still do not know why. Perhaps the climate changed significantly, eliminating the ability to farm on the mesa. What do we know, is that their descendants live on in modern tribes residing in the Rio Grande river valley in New Mexico, the ...

Editorial: Revamping state parks is tricky proposition
As far as state parks are concerned, being boring shouldn't always necessarily be seen as a bad thing.

Producers over at Bravo must be thanking Zeus they signed the ratings goldmine that is Phaedra Parks.
Galis: Save state parks from budget ax
Last time I was at Amicalola Falls State Park, as I sat in the lodge's big dining room enjoying a meal of the hearty Southern fare that's being crowded out by fast-food chains, I watched the vultures fly lazy circles over the ridges resplendent in fall colors and reflected on the place of Georgia's state parks in my life. Of all my contacts with state government, among the most consistently satisfying have been my visits to the parks. I've never been to one that wasn't well-maintained and staffed by people who seemed to care deeply about what they were doing.
